Every fall semester, the Department of Mathematics awards several scholarships:
Jessie F. L. York Scholarship ($1,000)
This scholarship was endowed by the family to honor Jessie York. An alumna of San Francisco State University, Jessie York's professional career as a mathematics teacher encouraged women to enter the field of mathematics. This scholarship, in the spirit of Jessie York, will be awarded to an undergraduate mathematics major to further this goal. Must be enrolled in at least 12 units.
Bridge Scholarship ($1,000)
This award was created and endowed by the Mathematics Department and other donors to encourage mathematics careers among groups historically underrepresented in mathematics. It will be awarded to an undergraduate or graduate mathematics student to further this goal. Must be enrolled half-time.
L. A. Chang, PhD., Memorial Scholarship ($1,000)
Lawrence Chang graduated from SF State in 1968 and received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from UC Berkeley in 1972. Blind from early childhood, he pursued a teaching and research career until his death in 1983 at the age of 39. The family of Lawrence Chang and the Mathematics Department endows this award to a graduate mathematics student whose academic career exemplifies Dr. Chang's commitment to excellence in mathematics. Must be enrolled in at least 3 units.
Sergio Martins Scholarship ($1,000)
The Sergio Martins Scholarship was established in 1996 by John Metzger, President of Western States Life Insurance Company in memory of Sergio Martins, a valued employee of the company, who had taught high school mathematics in Africa before coming to the U.S. The scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding undergraduate or graduate student. Must be enrolled in at least 3 units.
Milowski Scholarship ($1,289)
Alex Milowski is an SF State Math Department alumnus who graduated with his Master of Arts in 2004. Alex's commitment to the field of mathematics and his support of student access to education compelled him to make this scholarship available to graduate students. Alex would like to help students continue their education and overcome the obstacle of the rising cost of tuition, therefore he has pledged one semester of tuition for promising graduate students who are enrolled in at least 3 units of study.
The Frederick Wm Walters Scholarship ($1,000)
Mr. Walters was trained as a physicist but has always been passionate about mathematics. He is working on ideas that challenge our current beliefs about the fundamental constants of nature. Mr. Walters has been a long-time and steady supporter of students at SF State. This scholarship of $1,000 is pledged to support undergraduates as well as graduate students studying mathematics or statistics.
David Meredith & Friends Scholarship (2 awards of $1,500 each)
The late David Meredith was a Mathematics Professor at SFSU. He joined our faculty in 1972 after his Ph.D. from Brandeis, a postdoctoral appointment at Harvard, and a Moore Instructorship at MIT. This scholarship was set up in his memory by family and friends. Awards will be made to two outstanding undergraduate or graduate students.
Frank Sheehan Scholarship ($1,000)
This scholarship is for aspiring math teachers, showing academic promise, leadership and community contributions. Math majors with a concentration in teaching are eligible to apply. Applicants must demonstrate financial need.
Halmos Scholarship (3 awards of $1,500 each)
The Halmos Scholarship will be awarded to accomplished graduate or undergraduate students of the Mathematics Department who demonstrate a promise for furthering the knowledge, application, or teaching of mathematics during their stay at SFSU and beyond.
Pam Fong Scholarship ($1,250)
This scholarship is intended to support undergraduate students in the Department of Mathematics who demonstrates a need for financial assistance and are upper division (junior/senior) student at time of award distribution.
Math Matters Scholarship ($1,000)
The Math Matters Scholarship will help both graduate and undergraduate students majoring in mathematics who are planning a professional career in a mathematical field. Its purpose is to help hardworking graduate and undergraduate students from underrepresented socio-economic backgrounds with educational expenses.
The criteria for these awards are achievement, promise, and motivation in mathematics. Applications are available online through Academic Works.
