Federico Ardila

In 2016 I wrote the short article Todos Cuentan: Cultivating Diversity in Combinatorics for the Notices of the American Mathematical Society, where I outlined some of my thoughts around building mathematical spaces that welcome and serve every interested participant. When I reread this, it feels like a work in progress. It must be a work in progress. But I still agree with these principles, and I find them a useful foundation for my efforts in this direction. 

Axiom 1. Mathematical potential is distributed equally among different groups, irrespective of geographic, demographic, and economic boundaries. 

Axiom 2. Everyone can have joyful, meaningful, and empowering mathematical experiences. 

Axiom 3. Mathematics is a powerful, malleable tool that can be shaped and used differently by various communities to serve their needs. 

Axiom 4. Every student deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.
