Lecturer Faculty Hiring Policy

Lecturer faculty will be evaluated on their subject-matter knowledge and teaching skill. The Department of Mathematics upholds the principles that university teachers are experts in their subject matter and that advanced mathematical knowledge informs and improves mathematics teaching at all levels. Equally important is teaching skill, the ability to engage students and lead them in the acquisition of their own mathematical knowledge. Candidates for lecturer faculty positions will be asked to supply a vitae and letters of recommendation regarding their subject-matter knowledge and their teaching ability. They will also be interviewed by the chair. Candidates may submit additional evidence such as past teaching evaluations, classroom observations and scholarly work. Subject-matter knowledge will be measured primarily by education and work experience including academic and applied work; teaching skill will be evaluated through letters of recommendation, the interview, and other information submitted by the candidate. The chair may contact references and past employers for additional information.

Continuing lecturer faculty will be evaluated through current vitae, San Francisco State University's standard teaching evaluation, faculty classroom visits, and meetings with the chair. The vitae should include mention of all professional activities the candidate wants considered as part of their evaluation, including scholarly activities, meetings attended and curriculum development. Lecturer faculty are required to administer the standard teaching evaluation in all their classes and will receive a written classroom evaluation from a tenured/tenure-track faculty member at least once a year. Current vitae, student evaluations, and the classroom visit report will be included in the lecturer faculty member's departmental personnel file. The chair will meet with each lecturer faculty member to review performance at least once annually. At the end of each academic year, the chair will prepare a written evaluation of each lecturer faculty member based on the current vitae, the student evaluations, classroom visits, and any other information that has been added to the lecturer faculty member's departmental personnel file.

Qualified graduate students are employed as Graduate Teaching Associates (GTAs) to teach mathematics courses or to serve as teaching assistants for calculus classes.

All student employees must be enrolled at least half time. Students on academic probation are not qualified for student employment. Student employees are not to exceed 20 hours per week of combined work for the university.

The chair solicits GTA applications through email in September (for the following Spring), February (for the following Fall), and for incoming graduate students, in May (for the following Fall).

Qualified undergraduate and graduate students are employed by the department to work as graders for individual mathematics instructors. Additional opportunities to tutor are available through the university's Tutoring and Acdemic Support Center (TASC).

All student employees must be enrolled at least half time. Students on academic probation are not qualified for student employment. Student employees are not to exceed 20 hours per week of combined work for the university.

Each semester the math department hires graders for its classes numbered 200 and above. They typically work between 15 and 60 total hours during the semester at a pay rate of $18.67 / hr, paid monthly.

They should
- be responsible about completing work and paperwork on time and available to work for the whole semester
- be an undergraduate or graduate student currently in good standing at SFSU
- have received an A or B in the course to be graded, or equivalent

If you are interested in such a job, you should first offer your services as a grader directly to your past math instructors for whom you were an excellent student

The department also accepts applications to be placed in a general grader pool.  If you would like to apply to be in the grader pool, please fill out this short form:

If you were in the grader pool last semester, you should apply again because the set of classes you are now able to grade is hopefully larger.

Most graders are hired through direct selection by faculty and NOT the grader pool. (For data, in Fall 2021, 27 graders were hired. 2 of them came from the grader pool.)
