Mathematistas

Mathematistas is a student community that supports and builds toward gender equity in pursuit of higher mathematics. Gatherings are open to all who support their mission.

SFSU SIAM (Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics)

SIAM is the largest society in the field of Applied Math and it has incredible resources for both students and faculty. Activities include seminars, panels, and other social activities centered around applied math. Join the chapter and get your FREE SIAM membership by creating an account and choosing the San Francisco State Chapter.

Black Excellence in STEM (BE-STEM)

Black Excellence in STEM (BE-STEM) is a student organization located at San Francisco State University focused on supporting African American/Black students in science, technology, engineering and math. Their mission is "to empower and support Black STEM students through community!" They provide mentoring, various outreach opportunities in the SF Bay Area community, networking opportunities and future career planning in STEM skills. Currently they cater to Black students in undergraduate, graduate and post-baccalaureate programs at SF State.

Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics & Native Americans in Science (SACNAS)

SACNAS is dedicated to creating an inclusive community for underrepresented minorities passionate about a career in STEM. 

Math Education

San Francisco Math Circle

The San Francisco Math Circle explores the fun side of math! The SF Math Circle is an extracurricular math enrichment program that gives students an opportunity to develop their mathematical thinking skills in a supportive, collaborative and fun environment. In their after-school classes and camps, they promote positive attitudes toward math and learning through engaging, hands-on puzzles and games that involve both creativity and critical thinking.

SF Math Circle believes that everyone can engage in and enjoy mathematical thinking. They offer compelling, low-floor, high-ceiling activities that make mathematical thinking accessible and fun for students from diverse backgrounds.

Center for Science & Mathematics Education (CSME)

The College of Science and Engineering (CoSE) wants to cultivate wonderful science learning and teaching at all educational levels. The Center for Science and Mathematics Education has been established to this end. The Center seeks to:

  • Recruit, prepare and support good science and mathematics teachers

  • Foster research into science and mathematics education and promote its application

  • Establish a community of science and mathematics education scholars, practitioners and students.

The Center manages a number of projects and resources and serves as a support to many other education projects within CoSE.
