Transformations are often used in Western music to construct different versions of a particular musical subject for inclusion in a composition. Composers transform temporal, rhythmic, tonal, and textural elements.  On printed scores, these transformations have an obvious geometric character. This lecture is about temporal and tonal transformations of several types.

Here are six corresponding musical and geometrical terms:

Musical   Geometric
Imitation   Translation
Simultaneous inversion   Horizontal reflection
Imitative inversion   Glide reflection
Retrogradation   Vertical reflection
Diminution   Contraction
Augmentation   Dilation
