Using SFSU subscriptions off campus

SFSU pays for your access to many online resources.  If you're connected to the Internet via SFSU, access is automatic.  For access via another Internet service you must have an SFSU library account and PIN.  Click here for instructions about obtaining them.

It's hard to find further instructions for access via a non-SFSU portal.  The following description is for Microsoft's Internet Explorer 7 browser.  Other browsers support equivalent methods:  ask the SFSU library staff.

  1. Click these browser buttons in succession:  Tools/Internet Options/Connections/LAN Settings.
  2. Uncheck the box for automatically detecting settings.
  3. Check the box for using an automatic configuration script.
  4. In the address box enter  .
  5. Click OK twice in succession.

Now, whenever you connect to an Internet site hosted by a computer that provides SFSU any paid service, you will be asked for your name, and your SFSU ID number and Library account password.  That will happen even if you want only a free service from that site.  You'll be asked frequently to reidentify yourself.
